Top Nigerian Music Artistes To Perform At The O2

Gone are the days when the fame of the Nigerian Music Industry struggled to cross the shores of Africa. In modern times, most Nigerian top artistes are world-renowned artistes holding and selling out shows and contents in some of the world’s most prominent venues.

One of such venues is the O2 Arena in London, in the United Kingdom. Whenever you hear a Nigerian artiste is holding a show in the UK, the name, O2, is mentioned more often than not. Who are the Nigerian artistes that have performed at the famous O2 arena? You can check them out below.

  1. Wizkid

To many, Wizkid is the greatest Nigeria artiste – and African in some way – of all time. This, of course, is arguably but should we rate it using appearances at the O2, then Wizkid would have the title. The artiste has headlined shows in O2 multiple times – up to 5 – with the most recent coming during his Made in Lagos tour in late 2021.

His Made in Lagos tour at the O2 is noteworthy as he held shows for three consecutive days, selling out tickets for each day. In fact, the first set of tickets for the shows sold off in a few minutes – some say two minutes. The second set of tickets wasted no time in selling as well. Before 2021, Wizkid held shows at the O2 in 2020 and 2018.

  1. Davido

At the time of writing, Davido was the latest Nigerian artiste to host a show at the O2. OBO made this show one-of-a-kind as he brought in music artists from Nigeria, other African countries, and also the UK. Even his aide, Israel DMW, also got a chance to perform at the prestigious stage. Some people think the Dami Duro singer overdid it with the shedload of performers but that’s just who Davido is.

This wouldn’t be the first time Davido would host a show at the O2. He had previously done it in 2019, a show that’s regarded as the first time an African artiste would sell out the O2 arena. Is it true? Perhaps or perhaps not. Wizkid did perform at the O2 first but there’s no credible source to know if it was sold out and the show was hosted by Afro republik.

  1. 2Baba

2Baba is undoubtedly an African music legend but I bet you didn’t expect to see his name on this list. When did 2Baba hold a show at the O2? Well, 2Baba had his Buckwyld ‘n’ Breathless show at the O2 Arena in 2011. It won’t be wrong to say he was the first Nigerian artiste to headline an event at the O2. MoHits did it first in 2009 but MoHits isn’t an “artiste”.

2Baba’s O2 arena show was a phenomenal one albeit not being a sold out show. In his defence, the Nigerian music industry wasn’t as far-reaching as it is now. The African Queen singer had other top Nigerian singers at the show too including Timi Dakolo, Lynxxx, and SDC. Becca, the Ghanaian singer was also there.

  1. Burna Boy

After Starboy and OBO, Burna Boy is the third recent Nigerian artiste to perform a show at the O2. The Killin Dem crooner held his show at the London venue in 2021 and it was the first time he would do it. While it was his first and only time to headline an O2 Concert, it’s not the first and only time to perform at the venue. For one, he performed at the Wizkid O2 concert.

Burna Boy’s O2 concert in 2021 was congruous to his Twice As Tall album which he released in 2020. Also, he had just recently won the Grammy Award so you can imagine all the hype. Well, Burna Boy didn’t fail to deliver. Before the O2 Arena, Burna Boy had earlier hosted a concert at O2 Brixton Academy.

  1. D’Banj

Koko Master, D’Banj, and the Mo Hits crew graced the O2 Arena in 2009. Tagged the “Koko Concert”, it involved all of the Mo Hits crew including Don Jazzy, Dr. SID, Wande Coal, and D’Prince. Even new Mo Hits recruits – at the time – Ikechukwu wasn’t left out. Interesting, May7ven, and Tunde Ednut – now popular as a social media blogger – we’re at the event.

Who else was at the Koko Concert at the O2? Kanye West. Yes, the same Kanye West you know. Well, at the time, D’Banj was international and it wasn’t long after the concert that he signed to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D Music label. Unfortunately, the Mo Hits breakup happened not long after.

  1. Tiwa Savage

Here’s the first and only –  just yet – Nigerian female artiste to hold a show at the O2. Who other than the number 1 African Bad Gyal, Tiwa Savage, with her 2018 The Savage Tour. The show was at the O2 Arena but at the Indigo venue with a maximum 3,000 audience capacity. Nevertheless, the Nigerian music queen didn’t fail to thrill the crowd.

Other Nigerian artists who performed at the event include Don Jazzy, Dr. Sid, Korede Bello, Awilo, WSTRN, and Mystro. Aside from her own 20show, Tiwa Savage also performed at the O2 Arena at the Wizkid concert in 2019. At the time, their collaboration “Malo” was one of the hottest on the airwaves.

Wizkid, Davido, 2Baba, Burna Boy, D’Banj and Tiwa Savage are the top Nigerian music artistes to have performed at the O2 Arena.
