A police officer identified as Inspector Bashir Muhammad has been found voting at the polling booths. Muhammad was caught voting at the APC state congress which took place at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium at Kofar Mata in Kano State.
He is a member of the Special Protection Unit and assigned to the Government House in Kano, from where he was deployed as security aide to Abdullahi Abbas, a former state caretaker committee chairman of the APC. Following the APC congress votes, Abbas however emerged as the Kano State chairman of the APC.
The Zone 1 police command said it is disturbed by a video circulating on social media in which Muhammad could be seen voting alongside Abbas.
The Zonal PPRO, DSP Abubakar Zayyanu Ambursa, said the AIG in charge of Zone 1, Abubakar Bello, has ordered that the infraction be investigated. He said it is unprofessional for a police officer to vote at the polls and that the AIG has referred the matter to Zonal X-Squad for appropriate investigation and necessary action.
“In view of this seemingly unprofessional conduct of the inspector, the AIG has referred the matter to the Zonal X-Squad for investigation,” Ambursa stated. “If the Inspector is found to have committed the offence, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against him.”
The state police command said the matter will not be swept under the carpet and that the outcome of the investigation will be communicated to the public.
