The Nigerian movie industry produced 635 movies in the second quarter of 2021. This figure was provided by the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) and validated by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The NBS said the industry produced 416 movies in the first quarter of the year and 635 in the second quarter, marking a quarterly growth of 53.93% and a 1.44% year-on-year increase.
But in comparison, 626 movies were produced in the second quarter of 2020. This year’s second quarter figure has an increment of 9 over that of last year within the same period.
In breaking down the number of movies produced by states, the following statistics was obtained:
- Lagos – 234 movies
- Abuja – 196 movies
- Onitsha – 174 movies
- Jos – 9 movies
- Kano – 6 movies
- Benin – 7 movies
- Port-Harcourt – 7 movies
The Nigerian movie industry, better known as Nollywood, continues to grow in leaps and bounds with better production scales and top-tier directing. There is better technical quality and the story-line is more profound and appreciable. Many producers are also premiering their movies in theatres across the country while many of the films are also entered in for festival awards.
