Nigerian Idol is back in 2022 for its 7th Edition. As you would expect, Nigerians from all corners of the country are hopeful of winning the music/talent show.
This year’s edition comes with extra goodies. The winner gets to go home with thirty million Naira and an SUV jeep. It doesn’t end there; they also get a recording contract with Sony and an all-expense paid trip to South Africa.
With all of these, who wouldn’t want to win Nigerian idol? In this post, you can find out how to join this season’s show among other information.
What’s The Requirements For Nigerian Idols?
The requirements for participating in Nigerian idol is straightforward. To start with, you must be at least 16 years old to compete. On the other hand, you mustn’t be more than 30 years old. Thus the age range to join Nigerian idol 2022 is 16 to 30 years.
Next, for you to become a Nigerian idol, you must be a Nigerian citizen – of course. Hence, you can’t apply if you’re a foreigner in Nigeria. If you’re a citizen, you must be in Nigeria to apply as this is where the audition holds. There are no international Nigerian idol audition centers in other countries.
Finally, if you’ve partaken in previous Nigerian idol seasons, you can’t contest again. This is for people that passed the audition and got into the show. If you failed the audition previous times, you can still compete again.
The form for audition was available from November 14 – November 28, 2021. Due to the COVID-19, application was solo online. To apply for an audition, you just need to fill the application form and upload a video of you signing. It could be any song and the video needn’t be long; 30 seconds is ok.
If you qualify, you’ll get a message in your email or as SMS notifying you to come for a physical audition. This is where you go live on TV to sing in front of the judges. If you get a gold ticket, you qualify for the main show.
While filing the online form, here are information about yourself you’ll provide:
- First Name
- Date of Birth
- Passport photo or any image showing your head and shoulders
- Nigerian Passport Number or any other ID document
- Mobile Number
- Whatsapp Contact Number
- Email address
- Country of residence
- Current city of residence
- Residential address
- Postal Code
In addition to the above information, you’ll have to answer a few questions. These questions include:
- Why do you think you would make a great Idol?
- Who are your musical influences?
- What makes you unique?
- Sum up your life and who you are in less than 20 words
While you should provide answers that’ll impress the organizers which will increase your chances of being selected for the audition, it’s important to be genuine. Don’t come up with stories. Finally, upload your singing video.
As mentioned earlier, a 30 second-long video is enough for your Nigerian idol application. The video should be of good quality and clear; record in a well lit room. There’s no need to talk or introduce yourself, just go straight to the signing.
It should be an acapella, there should be no instrumentals, background track, or anyone to back you up. The audio of the video should be just your voice. If you’re a music artist, don’t upload your stage performances or music videos; it’s an automatic disqualification.
Nevertheless, if you already have your signing video on YouTube or Vimeo (just you singing), you can paste the link instead of recording a fresh video. Otherwise, record and upload your video in MP4, MOV, AVI, WMV, and other supported formats.
Nigerian Idol Auditioning Tips
Here are some top auditioning tips for Nigerian Idol season 7 as explained by the show organizers themselves:
- Pick a good song
It’s not about picking the most popular song; it’s about picking a song that allows you to experiment and showcase your vocal abilities without folding. Are you comfortable singing it? Do the notes make you cough? Know the lyrics? So look through your music list and try multiple songs until you get the perfect one.
- Do vocal exercises
Now that you can sing the lyrics even in your sleep, it’s time to align your vocals. Consider it a pre-Olympic ritual. Isn’t there a warm-up? Do some vocal warm-ups a few minutes before recording and you’re ready to go.
- Quality trumps all
Excellent camera, illumination, backdrop, and external noise cancellation. All of these criteria will help you submit a quality audition clip. You may get a ‘yes’ if you check these boxes.
- Have confidence
No matter how perfect the music is to your voice, a lack of confidence will diminish its power. We’ve heard that Nigerian Idol judges can detect confidence in your singing. Pranayama is a form of meditation. Just prepare your head and confidence before going into the spotlight.
- Have fun
Your excitement to join the Nigerian Idol glory train means you love music and want to live a rhythmic life. Your voice is strong, you’ve studied your songs and chanted a confidence mantra, so you’re ready to shine and have fun while doing it. Remember, this is an experience you will never forget, so try to have fun with it.
- Be honest with yourself
Finally, put on your critic’s cape and evaluate your entry for yourself. As a judge, ask yourself (or your family or friends) if you’d be wowed by this. If that’s the case, you’re all set.
