Buhari Says Tells UN That Nigeria Prioritises Healthy Diet and Affordable Nutrition

President Muhammadu Buhari told the United Nations in New York that Nigeria “prioritises healthy diets and affordable nutrition”. He made this statement during the Food Systems Summit event of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday.

Speaking on food security for the nation, Buhari said his administration has a robust food agenda that is targeted at “rebuilding our economy, creating jobs, and spurring growth” across all secotors of the country. He said his government is committed to providing sustainable and efficient food plans that will create abundant food for all.

The president said he plans to “lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty within a decade” with his food security agenda. He noted that the means to achieve this is through “knowledge dissemination, skills development, and information management systems to enhance agricultural productivity” for all categories of farmers.

He said he runs a responsive and inclusive food system that empowers women and youths to have better access to food production for all communities and the nation at large.

According to presidential media adviser, Femi Adesina, the president is also working hard to mitigate the effects of climate change as well as boost early warning systems that will aid food production and security in Nigeria. He said Buhari will collaborate with other nations in the areas of Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda for improved food security across the world.

“We hope to learn from and collaborate with member states that have grappled or are grappling with food systems concerns similar to ours,” the president stated. “We especially support the emerging coalitions of actions and sustainable food systems.”
