Everything you need to know about the Abeg app

Abeg became popular in Nigeria following its sponsorship of the 2021 Big Brother Naija Shine Your Eyes Season. The adverts are frequented on the TV channel and now many Nigerians are asking what the app is all about. What is it used for? Who owns it? These and more are some of the questions on people’s lips.

Well, in this article, I’ll be answering them and more as I cover everything you need to know about the Abeg app.

What is Abeg app used for?

Abeg app’s main features are sending and receiving money. Once you’ve created an account and your BVN has been validated with your phone number, the system searches your contacts to see who has downloaded the app.

You can submit a money request to anyone in your contact list who is an Abeg user, or fill in their username and they’ll get your request. You do not need to include or send your bank account information when requesting money. The most important thing is that your phone number be linked to the BVN you used to register.

You have the option of spending the money within the app by sending it to someone else or withdrawing it into your bank account, which requires linking your bank account to your Abeg account. To send money to other users, you must have money in your account wallet and know their usernames.

Who owns Abeg app?

The Abeg company was co-founded by Muheez Akanni, Michael Okoh and Dare Adekoya. However, Dare Adekoya is the most popular of the three. The Lagos-born app developer and programmer had previously worked with Voyance and Sterling bank as a product designer. He also worked with Swipe Max.

As a designer, he has worked with some of Nigeria’s top companies including Stanbic IBTC, OneOS, and Bruuk Oil Mill. He started Abeg technologies along Akanni Muheez in August 2020 and the next month, September 2020, the Abeg app was launched.

Is Abeg App Legit?

The Abeg app is a legit one. If it wasn’t, it wouldn’t be a headline sponsor of a show like Big Brother Nigeria which is not only popular in Nigeria but Africa at large. Abeg works in partnership with VFD MFB.

To open an Abeg account, you have to link your BVN which means the app works hand-in-hand with Nigerian commercial banks and the Central Bank too. Furthermore, the Abeg app is available in Google Play Store and Apple Store.

These are the native app stores of Android and iOS smartphones which the vast majority of Nigerians use. If there was any foul play in the Abeg app, it wouln’t be on these stores, most especially the Apple Store.

Finally, the thousands of Nigerians who have been using the Abeg App since it went viral all confirm that the app works.

How do I download Abeg app?

To download the Abeg app, you just need to visit your app store. If you use an Androind – Tecno, Samsung, Infinix, Itel, etc – simply visit the Google Play Store and search for the app. Then select the download and install option.

If you use an iPhone, simply launch the Apple Store and search for Abeg app. Click the install button and you’re done. The process is the same for iPads. You cannot use Abeg via the web as it’s exclusively an app.

How do I register for Abeg?

After launching the Abeg app, you can register by simply following the instructions. The most important details you have to provide include your name, phone number, date of birth, email address, and BVN. You’ll also have to upload an image.

It’s important that all the details you provide match the details in your BVN records or else your registration will be unsuccessful. Once you successfully create your account, you can start using it to send and receive money immediately.

What does Abeg naira mean?

Abeg Naira is simply Nigerian Naira. When you deposit or receive money into your account, the money becomes Abeg Naira but it’s still the same value as the Nigerian Naira. The only reason Abeg naira is popular and some people mistake it to be different is due to the Big Brother Naija house.

Housemates are allowed to only spend Abeg Naira in buying food stuff and other items they need in the house. Inside the house, the Abeg Naira value is somewhat different from Nigerian Naira value. However, outside the Big Brother house, there is nothing like Abeg Naira; you only have Nigerian Naira.

How can I fund my Abeg wallet?

Funding your Abeg wallet is simple. You can simply pay in money using your credit card or have someone transfer money to you. Also, you can copy your Abeg account number and transfer money to your wallet like any normal bank transfer.

Once your deposit, transfer, or card payment is successful, the money will automatically reflect in your Abeg wallet. You can now use the money to carry out any transaction you want like purchasing airtime, data, paying bills, and all the rest.

How do I withdraw money from Abeg?

You can withdraw money from your Abeg wallet to your bank account at anytime. So long as the account is linked to your BVN and also the phone number you use in registering your Abeg account. From your wallet balance, simply click on Withdraw to withdraw money.

Select the bank you want to withdraw to, if you have multiple bank accounts and enter the amount you want to withdraw. Finally, submit your request and it’ll be processed on the go.
